Clay I Course DescriptionIn this course students learn and use a variety of clay/pottery/ceramics materials and techniques as they explore the process of creating 3-dimensional forms using clay.
Project List6 Pinch Pots
Create six different (in both size and shape) pinch pots using a variety of materials to create selection of surface textures. Variety is a key point Coil Vessel Create a coil vessel at least 8” in one dimension (before shrinking) that looks as though it holds something intangible, and therefore creates a particular theme. Example: Love, Jealousy, Greed, or Imagination. Particular attention should be paid to the theme, but remember that ambiguity is an important part of art. Keep them asking questions. Slab Box Houses For this project you will construct a house. The roof of the house should be a removable lid. The lid should fit the box well and not move or slide. The box must also include sculptural additions that add to the overall composition of the piece. The house can be in any style that you choose. This project will require some research. An Environment Certain things can only happen in certain places. In this project you will create a small, detailed, interesting place that looks as though something has just happened there. You need not include people. A Wall Pocket For this project you should create a pocket that hangs on the wall that is meant to hold something. Pay particular attention to the shape and how you plan to decorate it. A Mythological Sculpture For this project you will create a sculpture of a mythological animal or other creature. It should be at least 9” in one dimension and should be interesting in both color and texture. You will need to work from source material, so don’t try to do it without it. A Clay Mask For this project you will build a convex mask with hollow eyes that is based on an actual persons face. You will have to do research for this project, so feel free to start on that soon. 2 or 4 Your Choice Project Once you have finished the above listed projects, you may start to create some projects of your own design. If you have spent a great deal of time and attention on the above projects, you may only have time for 2. If you work more quickly, then you will do 4. The wheel will be an option for these your choice projects. |
