Photography Course Description
In this course students will learn traditional SLR Camera and darkroom techniques and use these new found skills in a quest to develop his/her own photographic vision. Close attention will be paid to subtleties of the process, and the development of individual creativity.
Project List
Choosing the Perfect Subject: Using the Photographer’s Eye (1 Roll) Shoot things that you see as “photo worthy.” The things you pick will be a clear indication of what type of subjects you will continue to seek out for the remainder of the course. You will print proof sheets for these rolls of film.
Landscapes (2 Rolls) Shoot two rolls of film of exterior scenes. Each of the following elements should be represented somewhere within those shots: Light, Shadow, Water, Sky, Reflection, Motion, and Calm. You will print your 4 best negatives from this shoot.
Portraiture (2 Rolls) Shoot two rolls of film of people, paying particularly close attention to the face. You should have, but are not limited to: Formal Portraits, Informal Portraits, People at Work, Group Portraits, and Self-Portrait. You will print your 5 best negatives from this shoot (one of each of the aforementioned shots.)
Abstraction (1 Roll) Through camera angle or camera settings, create photographic abstractions, and then print the best two.
Digital Portfolio Though this is not an exclusively digital class, you will be developing a digital portfolio over the course of the semester also. This can be worked on at any time and can be of any subject of your choosing. You will present your digital work as a slideshow to the class after Thanksgiving.
Content & Concepts (2 Rolls) In art there are almost always themes – love, loss, friendship, glory, beauty – in this project you will choose a particular theme and fully and accurately represent this theme through the 4 prints that you will make from these rolls.
You will create a 100-point Power Point presentation of a famous and well-known photographer that you will present to the class toward the end of the semester. It will include 15-20 examples of this photographer’s work. Please use black or white backgrounds (so not to distract from the artwork) and include whatever information you can about the work, and any biographical information you think is necessary.
See the Project Sheet for each project for more specific instructions, due dates, and point values.
